Ambuja Cements Ltd., a part of the global conglomerate LafargeHolcim and one of the leading cement manufacturing companies in India, has set new sustainable development benchmarks with the internationally renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) 2017 ranking the Company at No.7 in the Construction Material category. With this, Ambuja Cement emerged as the only Indian company to notch up such a high rank, competing with global and Indian companies.
The Company, which was invited to participate in the DJSI Emerging Markets Index, achieved this special feat in line with its vision to be the most sustainable and competitive company in the industry; and performed exceedingly well in key parameters, surpassing its own 2016 score.
Commenting on this accomplishment, Ambuja Cement MD & CEO Ajay Kapur said, “It is a moment of pride that our sustainability performance has been recognised globally. The high ranking in the most renowned DJSI reaffirms our commitment to the principles of sustainable development. This is yet another step drawing us closer to achieving our vision as the most sustainable company in the industry.”
“Ambuja shall continue to effectively conduct the True Value approach – a triple bottom-line which encompasses three Ps (Profit, People and Planet), creating greater value to all stakeholders – customers, investors, employees and society at large,” added Mr Kapur.
The DJSI is a family of benchmarks that uses a best-in-class approach to select sustainability leaders from various industry sectors across the world, enabling investors to track the companies’ performance and integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios. Since the launch of the DJSI World in 1999, several other Dow Jones Sustainability Indices and new index families that rely on the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) results have been developed to meet a range of investor specific needs.
In the arena of sustainability, it has been raining awards and accolades for Ambuja. Recently, Ambuja bagged six awards – an ‘Outstanding Accomplishment for Corporate Excellence’ award while the rest for ‘Domain Excellence’ in environment management and corporate social responsibility– from the apex body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The Company also secured two prestigious awards at the International seminar held by the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB) recently.
