Heart Attack: Signs, Causes and diagnosis

A heart attack is considered to be the death of a segment of a heart muscle which is caused as a result of the loss of blood supply. During a heart attack, the blood is usually cut off which happens because the artery that supplies it to the heart muscle is blocked as a result of a blood clot.

If some of the muscles of the heart die, a person begins to experience electrical instability as well as chest pain. This loss of blood is usually caused by the complete blockage of the coronary artery- one of the arteries that perform the task of supplying blood to the muscles of the heart. According to a heart hospital in Delhi, heart attacks have become very common in the present time, following one reason or the other.

Symptoms of a heart attack:

A heart hospital in Delhi has laid down following symptoms related to a heart attack:

  • Heaviness, discomfort, pressure or pain in the chest, arm or beneath the breastbone.
  • Discomfort caused in the back which further radiates to the jaw, arm or throat.
  • Feeling of indigestion, choking or fullness.
  • Dizziness, vomiting, sweating, nausea.
  • A feeling of extreme weakness, shortness of breath, anxiety, etc.
  • Irregular or rapid heartbeats.

During a heart attack, all these symptoms last for a period of 30 minutes or longer. The same is not relieved by rest or administering nitroglycerin under the tongue. A number of people experience a heart attack without having any warning signs or symptoms. This kind of heart attack is more common in people with diabetes. The treatment of a heart attack is bypass surgery.

Causes of a heart attack:

Most numbers of deaths from heart attacks are caused as a result of ventricular fibrillation of the heart which occurs before the person suffering from a heart attack could reach the emergency room. There are a number of causes of a heart attack. According to a heart hospital in Delhi, following are the major reasons for a heart attack:

  • Angina: This causes chest pain because of the lack of oxygen or blood supply to the heart.
  • Age: Heart attacks are very common in men after 45 years of age and women after 55 years of age.
  • Diabetes: People with diabetes are at a greater risk of having a heart attack.
  • High level of cholesterol: This problem increases the chances of blood clot formation in the arteries.
  • Diet: The consumption of largely saturated fats is also responsible for causing a heart attack.
  • Genetics:  A person can also inherit a higher risk of a heart attack.

Diagnosis of a heart attack:

Any healthcare professional, doctor or nurse would send a person straight to the hospital if they are of a doubt that a person might be suffering from a heart attack. Once a person reaches the hospital, a number of tests are carried out to diagnose the problem. These tests include the following:
