Lucknow, 5 September, 2019: To contribute to the ‘Fit India’ movement, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram organized a free Cardiology and Oncology camp at Aashiyana Gurudwara, Lucknow where 450 patients were screened for free.
Heart problems are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world. According to WHO, over 17.5 million people suffer from some form of cardiac ailment namely coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, cardiac arrest, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia and stroke amongst others. Lifestyle modifications such as regular blood pressure monitoring, maintained cholesterol levels, diabetes, non-smoking, weight management and regular exercises can contribute to a healthy heart.
“Throughout our practice we have found huge recurrence of cardiology cases from Lucknow and central Uttar Pradesh. Through our camp in Lucknow, we want to spread awareness that timely intervention can not only treat, but also cure the condition. Cardiac arrest, if treated within a few minutes can be reversed. In this camp over 200 people were screened and 30% of them were found to be suffering from some cardiac ailment. Consumption of junk food, sedentary lifestyle, tobacco and alcohol, and obesity are a few major reasons for increasing cardiology cases.” Said Dr Udgeath Dhir, Director & Head, CTVS, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and accounted for 7.6 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2008. Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue to rise to over 13.1 million in 2030. Presently in India, it is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Many cancers are preventable by controlling the modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, amongst others.
“Through this camp, we hope to spread awareness about the importance of early detection and screening for cancer. Cancer is one disease which is spreading rapidly due to the sedentary lifestyle and often people ignore the common symptoms of cancer. We would like to take this opportunity to sensitize the society about the increasing Cancer problems in India. Obesity is one of the common risk factors of cancer in patients. Obese Females are at a higher risk of Breast cancer and uterus cancer and these have become widely common in India.” Said Dr. Alok Tiwari, Consultant, Surgical Oncology Nephrology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram
“Being a healthcare provider our main aim is to educate people on how to live a healthy lifestyle. If people are aware of the symptoms of a disease and realize the importance of early detection, half the battle is won. Our purpose to organize this camp is to provide education and free medical services to the society. We appreciate the zeal of general masses towards their health who have participated in the camp in such huge numbers. We will continue to organize such events in the future and educate people on the importance of health and healthy lifestyle.” Said Dr Ritu Garg, Zonal Director, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram
