New Delhi, May 21, 2025.
After several consecutive days of searing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, Delhi-NCR witnessed a dramatic shift in weather on Wednesday evening. A powerful dust storm swept through the region, accompanied by strong winds, rain, and hail in some parts, offering brief respite from the intense heat but causing significant disruption to daily life.
The weather took a sharp turn late Wednesday evening as fierce winds and a dust storm engulfed various parts of the National Capital Region. Residents across South, North, and West Delhi reported sudden gusts of wind and reduced visibility. In several localities, hailstones were also observed, adding to the dramatic change.
The storm left a trail of dust over roads, causing traffic slowdowns and accidents in some areas. Power outages were reported in parts of the capital due to falling trees and line damage. However, the brief spell of rain in many neighbourhoods helped bring down the oppressive heat and humidity that had gripped the city for days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), wind speeds reached up to 79 km/h in some areas. Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors unless necessary and to take precautions against further potential disturbances.
In a related weather incident, IndiGo flight 6E-2142 from Delhi to Srinagar encountered severe turbulence due to a hailstorm just before its scheduled landing on Tuesday evening. The aircraft, carrying 227 passengers and crew, was forced to declare an emergency but landed safely at Srinagar airport around 6:30 PM.
The extreme weather caused visible damage to the aircraft, particularly to the nose cone, and led to luggage being displaced within the cabin. Passengers described moments of panic, with many praying and applauding the crew for their composure and expertise.
