The chemistry of captain and coach remains arguably the most important for a sports team. For Indian cricket, when it comes to picking the most effective duo of captain and coach, there would hardly be any competition for the pairing of MS Dhoni and Gary Kirsten. The two inspired India to one of its finest sporting glories as the Men in Blue lifted the 2011 ICC World Cup. While Kirsten had left the Indian team long ago, rumours of Dhoni’s retirement have hit the social media time and again. For the former South Africa captain, however, MSD deserves to bow out from the game on his own terms.
The visuals of Kirsten being lifted on the shoulders of Indian players after the team’s historic triumph in the final of the 2011 World Cup against Sri Lanka at Wankhede are still fresh in the minds of Indian cricket fans. Having previously warned those wanting Dhoni out of the Indian team to ‘replace him at their own peril’, Kirsten has reiterated his stance about the former India captain’s future.
In an interview with the Times of India, the Proteas legend called Dhoni among the greatest sportsmen in the world who doesn’t need to be told whether his time is up or not.
Gary Kirsten on MS Dhoni’s retirement:
“MS (Dhoni) is an incredible cricketer. Intelligence, calmness, power, athleticism, speed and a match-winner separate him from others and puts him amongst the greatest sportsmen in the modern era,” Kirsten said.
“He (Dhoni) has earned the right to leave the game on his own terms and no one should dictate to him when that time is,” he added.
On Wednesday, #DhoniRetires started to trend on social media as certain fans started to spread rumours of the Jharkhand-born wicket-keeper batsman’s retirement. The rumours infuriated Dhoni’s wife Sakshi who slammed those spreading misinformation and asked them to ‘get a life’.
