27th April is the new moon day of the month of Vaishakh, it is called Satuwai Amavasya. On this day, there is a tradition of worship, charity and offering incense and meditation for the ancestors. In astrology, the Sun is considered to be the planet responsible for Sunday. Therefore, on Sunday and Amavasya, the day should be started with Surya Puja. It is customary to donate Sattu on this Amavasya.
The best time to offer Dhoop and meditation for ancestors is in the afternoon. Morning and evening are the best times to worship the gods and goddesses and around 12 noon is the time to offer Dhoop and meditation for ancestors. This time is called Kutap Kaal. Burn cow dung cakes in the afternoon of Amavasya and when the smoke stops coming out of the cakes, offer incense made of jaggery and ghee on the embers.
Donation of Sattu made of rice: On this day, in the Shraddha performed for the ancestors, rice balls are donated and Sattu made of rice flour is donated. This makes the ancestors happy. Rice is called Havishya Anna i.e. food of the gods. Rice is used in every yajna. Rice is also dear to the ancestors. Shraddha and Tarpan cannot be performed without rice. Therefore, ancestors are satisfied by using rice specially on this day.
