Short sleep, long-term health effect: Why 5 hours isn’t enough:33% of Indians have insomnia

Sleep is one of the most viral aspect of human health. As we need water to drink, air to breath, the same we need sleep to give rest to our body. Still there are a number of people struggling with sleep-related issues globally. As per the recent national survey on India’s sleep pattern, 59 per cent of Indians get less than 6 hours of good sleep.

Recent studies show that approximately 5-7 crore Americans have sleep disorders, while around 33% of Indians experience some form of insomnia. This is an alarming situation leading to a number of lifestyle diseases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also already warned declaring sleep deprivation as a global epidemic. It has stated that modern lifestyle factors including digital device usage, work stress, and irregular schedules are some of the reasons behind it.

According to a study published in the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), an adult needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep everyday for better functioning. While as per age-

  • A baby needs 12-15 hours of sleep
  • An older adult needs 8-9 hours of sleep
  • Children and teens need around 10 hours of sleep
