SPS 2023: New Snapchat Features To Fuel Your Friendships

and help you stay connected to the people who matter most

On Snapchat there are so many ways to stay in touch, express yourself, and celebrate your unique friendships. Today, we shared new updates that help you stay in touch with the people who matter most — your friends and family.

Calling

Every month, more than 100 million Snapchatters keep in touch through voice and video calling.* Now, you can get even closer to your friends with calls… literally, with new Calling Lenses that let you break free from the grid and appear together, in one frame, and soon, even play games and solve puzzles while you’re virtually face-to-face.

Stories

Since 2013, you’ve shared your life with friends through Stories, and now there are two new ways to show what you’re up to. The first is a new type of Story called ‘After Dark.’ Next time you’re up late studying or hanging out, add to the After Dark Story. Come morning, see the Story unfold to debrief on the night. The second is Communities, a feature that lets you share your perspective with classmates. Throughout the month, Communities will be rolling to additional schools.

While Snaps and Chats are designed to delete by default, some Snaps are too good not to save. In fact, flashbacks made from Snapchat Memories are viewed over one billion times each day, and now, we’re bringing these throwbacks right into your conversations with friends, so you can relive the moments made up of your favorite Snaps you’ve saved together.*

Snap Map

Speaking of Snap Map, we’re adding a new location sharing option, making it easier to catch each other on the go. Plus, look out for new landmarks standing out in 3D, plus new tags on the places that were buzzing last night among friends and the broader Snapchat community.

On Snap Map and beyond, 1.7 billion Snapchatters show up as their Bitmoji.* This year, we added shoppable fashion so your Bitmoji could not only look, but also dress just like you. Soon, we’ll have even more styles to choose from, and it will all come to life in a new dimension with an updated avatar style that’s more expressive and personal.

Bitmoji fashion isn’t the only way to stand out from the crowd. Today, more than 3 million Snapchatters are customizing their Snapchat through the exclusive features available through Snapchat+, and soon, Verizon customers who want to upgrade can purchase a subscription through their +play platform.*

Happy Snapping!

SPS 2023: New Programs and Features for Creators

More offerings that help creators to make great content and build a business on Snapchat

Snapchat’s camera makes storytelling easier and enables anyone to express themselves and become a content creator. In fact, 86% of young Americans want to create content[1] and 90% of Gen-Z is already on Snapchat.[2]

Today we announced new programs that help creators build sustainable businesses and introduced new tools to grow and engage with their audience across Stories and Spotlight.

Monetization Programs

Our Stories revenue share program places ads within creators’ Stories, providing a recurring source of cash payouts so they can reinvest in making great content for our community.

Already, creators in an early pilot of the Stories revenue share program are posting more often to Snapchat, and our community is loving the content they’re creating. The total time Snapchatters spend watching Stories from these creators in the US has more than doubled year over year.

Now, creators who have at least 50,000 followers, 25 million monthly Snap views, and post at least 10 Stories a month may be eligible to join our Stories revenue share program. Creators can see more details on qualifying criteria and eligible countries on the Creator Hub.

Our Spotlight reward program is one of the ways we continue to support our community of aspiring and emerging creators as they turn content creation into a career. We are increasing the total rewards available to reward creators for making the top Spotlight Snaps.

Public Stories

We’ve listened to our community, who want more ways to share their creativity with a wider audience, all while keeping Snapchat the best place for their real friends.

Starting today, Snapchatters aged 18 or older will be able to post their own Public Story with a simple tap. Open the camera, create a Snap, and choose to share it with friends or add it to your Public Story, all from the same account.

And posting to Stories has never been easier! Our new scheduling feature gives creators more control and allows them to post to their Story whenever, wherever. Creators can also save a Snap to their new Public Profile and get access to content performance insights and Story Replies.

Expanding Creator Content on Snapchat

We’re bringing creator content to new surfaces across Snapchat like Snap Map and are making it easier to discover creators across Stories and Spotlight.

Creators helping our community discover the next “can’t miss” restaurant can expand their reach by simply tagging locations in their Spotlight Snaps. With place tags, their videos will appear on place profiles on the Snap Map, where more than 300 million Snapchatters go each month for great local recommendations.[3]

When creators make a Story they love, they can save it to their profile. Snapchatters can now find those best-of moments on the Stories page. It’s a great way to discover or find new creators to follow and dive deeper into Stories from their favorite creators.

More Tools and Features
We’ve also launched dozens of new features and updates over the past year to improve the creator experience, with new ones continuing to roll out every few weeks.

Creators can now add a Linktree, the leading link-in-bio platform, to their new Public Profile — this exclusive integration will further drive fans to their content on Snapchat, bringing their audience deeper into their world.

More recently, we launched Remix so Snapchatters can react to and re-share Spotlight Snaps and enhanced Spotlight Replies to give creators more control over the replies that appear on their videos. Notice a song matched with one of your favorite AR Lenses? We launched a new tool that recommends Sounds to pair with Lenses to help make Snaps even more expressive.

Happy Snapping, creators!

SPS 2023: Enhancing the Live Music Experience Through AR

Snapchat is making going to a music festival or seeing a live concert even more immersive with new augmented reality experiences and technology

At Snap, we love building new ways to help people experience the world and the things they care about — whether it be daily communication with friends and family, improving fashion with AR try-on technology, attending sporting events and enhancing the fan experience, and even seeing live music.

Our community is full of music fans, and 85% of Snapchatters report using the app to enhance their experience of going to see live music.[4] This year, prepare to experience live music like never before!

Live Nation

We’re building on our multi-year partnership with Live Nation to enhance live music with augmented reality and bringing custom AR experiences to 16 of the biggest festivals, including:

  • Beyond Wonderland Southern California (San Bernardino, CA)
  • Electric Daisy Carnival (Las Vegas, NV)
  • Creamfields South (Hylands Park, UK)
  • Roots Picnic (Philadelphia, PA)
  • The Governors Ball (New York, NY)
  • Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (Manchester, TN)
  • Day Trip Festival (Long Beach, CA)
  • Wireless Festival (Finsbury Park, UK)
  • Lollapalooza Paris (Paris, France)
  • Rolling Loud Miami (Miami, FL)
  • Lollapalooza (Chicago, IL)
  • Creamfields North (Daresbury Estate, UK)
  • Reading Festival (Reading, UK)
  • Leeds Festival (Bramham Park, UK)
  • Lights On (Mountain View, CA)
  • Austin City Limits (Austin, TX)

Our AR Compass and 3D map of the grounds will be available at all of them, helping you make your way to the right stage at the right time and find your friends instead of getting lost in the crowd. With custom AR Lenses to express yourself and enhance Snaps, festival-goers can truly see music differently.

New Integration with Disguise

Today, we also shared our new integration with Disguise, the industry’s leader in live event visualization and virtual production technology, that will bring Snap AR to some of the world’s largest venues and tours. During future shows, fans can see AR visuals through the Snapchat camera that interact with the on-stage visual production, via Disguise RenderStream, bringing the artist’s creative vision to life like never before.

Kygo

We’ll also be teaming up with one of the world’s most famous DJs, Kygo, to create AR experiences for some of his concerts this summer so fans can immerse themselves in his music, and we can’t wait to work with more artists later this year.

We’re so excited to continue making live performances even more immersive so Snapchatters can truly see music differently.

SPS 2023: Transforming Retail with the ARES Shopping Suite

Improving the shopping experience and delivering value to our community through AR, both on and off Snapchat

At Snap, we’re passionate about bringing unique and useful AR experiences and AI recommendations to consumers around the world through augmented reality.

AR Enterprise Services (ARES) brings our world-class technology into customers’ own apps and websites, as well as stores. ARES’ first offering for retailers, Shopping Suite, has already shown success for businesses to improve brand loyalty, decrease product return rates, and differentiate in a competitive environment.

Thanks to Shopping Suite, partners are able to provide shoppers with new ways to check out products in 3D, try on apparel and accessories in AR, and receive fit recommendations with AI.

Shopping Suite

Shopping Suite is made up of five features, including 3D Viewer, AR Try-On, and Fit Finder to make it easier to shop with confidence and allow retailers to make AR creation and management simple, fast, and cost-effective.

  • AR Try-On: Shoppers can try-on new styles of clothing, footwear, and accessories in real time. This includes Clothing Try-On technology, which allows shoppers to upload a photo of themselves to instantly see how a product looks on them, and Accessory Try-On, which lets shoppers interact with products in AR experiences live, directly from product detail pages.
  • 3D Viewer: An interactive product visualization experience that lets shoppers review every angle and detail of an item.
  • Fit Finder: An AI technology to give shoppers highly accurate fit and size recommendations perfect for their unique body shape and fit preferences.
  • Enterprise Manager: A front-end dashboard and backend infrastructure to manage and create AR assets, implement the Shopping Suite SDK, create AR experiences, and manage 3D asset catalogs — all while seeing real-time performance analytics for consumer engagement and conversions.
  • Hands-on Integration Services: A dedicated in-house team helps clients seamlessly onboard and enable Shopping Suite’s powerful features from kick-off to completion.

AR Mirrors

Today, we’re introducing a new ARES service called AR Mirrors. Our AR Mirrors bring the power and creativity of AR to businesses in their own physical spaces and events, so that customers can virtually try on products, play with engaging and fun experiences that encourage them to create and share content, and receive helpful guides and explanations to learn more about the products they see in the store.

Brands that create innovative experiences, such as virtual try-ons and using AR in-store, are 82% more likely to be recommended to others, making AR Mirrors a must-have addition to stores.[5] Retail brands like Men’s Wearhouse and Nike have already used AR Mirrors to enhance the in-store experience, and we currently have our AR Mirror in a Men’s Wearhouse store to get shoppers ready for prom and wedding season.

We’re also partnering up with Coca-Cola to transform a vending machine into an entirely new kind of product experience. Our first prototype is an AR-enabled Coca-Cola vending machine, which offers a portal to incredible AR experiences, rewards, and more. Shoppers can step up to the machine and use hand gestures to control what comes next.

Snap and Coca-Cola share a long-term vision to build an AR ecosystem that evolves the way people engage with the Coke brand across their vending machines, app, and website, and we’re thrilled to bring this experience to life.

We are making shopping — on and off Snapchat — easier, personalized, and a lot more fun. We can’t wait for customers to try these new experiences the next time they shop and to continue bringing real business value with AR and AI to more industries in the near future.

SPS 2023: Making Snapchat Your Most Personal Camera

Surfacing the right Lens at the right time, including new Generative AI Lenses

At Snap, we’ve long believed that augmented reality enhances our community’s relationships with their friends, family, and the world.

Our community interacts with AR at an incredible scale — approximately two out of every three Snapchatters engage with AR on our service daily1 and play with Lenses over 6 billion times per day on average.2

With more people using AR every day, our team has been pushing the boundaries of how AR experiences are created. Through advancements in machine learning, AR can be created incredibly fast, look more realistic than ever before, and unleash exciting creative possibilities for our community.

Generative AI Lenses

We’re unveiling a new generation of Lenses powered by Generative AI, now available globally. Snapchatters can now transform themselves and the world around them into an animated sci-fi scene through the Cosmic Lens.

A Camera Built for You

Since there are millions of Lenses available on Snapchat, we’re making it easier for our community to find the most helpful, relevant Lenses at the right time — making Snapchat feel like the most personal camera in the world.

First, we’re beginning to recommend Lenses that fit with the context of a photo or video a Snapchatter has captured. Through a combination of visual understanding of what’s in the camera’s view and APIs that understand factors including the local weather forecast and time of day, Lenses are dynamically surfaced to match the moment. Over the next few months, Snapchatters will find more Lens recommendations when people or pets are captured in the frame.

Next, we’re testing ways to make it faster to add AR to Memories. Snapchatters will see their recent shots alongside Lenses in the Snapchat Camera, so they’re right on hand when inspiration strikes for a throwback Snap.

Finally, we’ve improved our Lens Carousel ranking algorithms to recommend Lenses based on Snapchatters’ unique preferences and updated the AR Bar. Now, Snapchatters will find hundreds of suggested Lenses organized by category, right on the Camera screen.

These updates offer our AR creator community more surfaces for their Lenses to be recommended to Snapchatters. Throughout the year, we’ll roll out a suite of new tools in Lens Studio that let AR creators select the scenarios where Lenses will be the most relevant and helpful for Snapchatters.

We’re driven to bring our community the most creative and helpful AR experiences alongside our vibrant community of AR creators, developers, and partners.

SPS 2023: What’s Next for My AI

Bringing My AI to Snapchatters around the globe

Snapchat+ subscribers have been loving My AI, our AI-powered chatbot, sending nearly 2 million chat messages per day to learn more about movies, sports, pets, and the world around them. Today, we announced My AI is rolling out to Snapchatters globally, now with brand new features:

  1. Personalize My AI: Your AI comes with one of thousands of unique Bitmoji variations and can be easily customized to make it truly your own. Design a custom Bitmoji for your AI, give it a name, and start chatting.

  1. Bring My AI into Conversations with Friends: It’s easy to bring My AI into any of your conversations with friends. Simply @ mention My AI and ask a question on behalf of the group. It will be clear when an AI has entered the chat and includes a sparkle next to its name.

  1. Snapchat Recommendations: My AI surfaces place recommendations from the Snap Map and suggests relevant Lenses. For example, you can ask My AI to suggest weekend activities for your family or get the perfect Lens recommendation to wish a friend a happy birthday.

  1. Share Snaps with My AI: Our community can send Snaps to My AI and receive a chat reply.

  1. Watch It Snap You Back: With over 55,000 Snaps created on Snapchat every second on average, Snapping is a natural way that our community stays in touch. Soon Snapchat+ subscribers will be able to Snap My AI and get a unique generative Snap back that keeps the visual conversation going!

Since launching My AI, we’ve worked to improve by:

  • Programming My AI to adhere to our community guidelines to help protect against responses that could be inappropriate or harmful.

  • Implementing a new age signal using a Snapchatter’s birthdate, so the chatbot will consistently take their age into consideration.

  • Adding additional moderation technology, which will allow us to assess the severity of potentially harmful content and temporarily restrict Snapchatters’ access to My AI if they misuse the service.

  • Preparing to incorporate My AI into our in-app parental tool, Family Center, which will allow caregivers to see if their teens are chatting with My AI and how often.

We will continue to use these early learnings to make AI a more safe, fun, and useful experience, and we’re eager to hear your thoughts. You can press and hold on any My AI response to provide detailed feedback to our team.
