Doctors left a towel inside a woman’s abdomen during a cesarean delivery in the government hospital of Kuchaman 3 months ago.
Ignorant of this negligence of the doctors, she kept suffering from abdominal pain caused by the presence of a foreign body in her abdomen for nearly three months despite visiting several hospitals and doctors.
She finally reached AIIMS, where tests revealed a 15×10 cm towel in her abdomen. The doctors of the AIIMS then undertook a surgery and removed the towel from her abdomen.
Due to abdominal pain, the woman could eat very little, which significantly reduced her breast milk production. As a result, her newborn baby had to be fed external milk.
The CMHO (Didwana) Anil Judia , however has constituted a committee for inquiry into the matter and has assured action after the report is received.
A family member Manmohan said that she suffered from severe abdominal pain for nearly three months, but the negligence went undetected. She sought treatment at Kuchaman’s government hospital, as well as private and government hospitals in Makrana. Even in Ajmer, doctors conducted a CT scan and mistakenly identified the towel as a lump in her abdomen. However, when her family took her to AIIMS, the investigation revealed the negligence.
Gestro Surgeon Subhash Soni infomred that a CT scan revealed the presence of a foreign body inside her abdomen, prompting doctors to decide on surgery. During the operation, the discovery of a towel shocked the doctors. The large-sized towel was stuck to her intestines, causing significant damage. Over the three months of enduring the pain, the woman took various medications for relief, which also harmed other organs in her body.
The woman had been admitted to AIIMS on November 15, and the surgery was performed on November 17. The operation lasted around five hours. Afterward, the doctors handed over the towel in a three-kilogram plastic container. She remained hospitalized for about eight days and has now been discharged.
