No payment problem with Russia on oil imports: Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

New Delhi, January 03, 2023. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday said there are no payment problems in buying oil from Russia and the recent decline in purchase is a function of discounts they offer. He said Russian oil made up for just 0.2 per cent of all the oil that India imported in February 2022, before the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. Post the Ukraine war, some Western nations shunned Russian oil, leading to Moscow offering discounts. This led to Indian refiners lapping up the discounted oil. The discounts made Russia India's top oil supplier with a 40 per cent share. The share fell when the discounts were lower.

Truck drivers coming back to work,

New Delhi, January 03, 2024. Truck drivers, who went on strike to protest against the new stringent law on hit-and-run cases, have started coming back to work and normalcy will return in a day or two, truckers’ body All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said on Wednesday. AIMTC on Tuesday appealed to protesting truck drivers to end their strike after the government assurance that the decision to invoke stringent jail and fine provisions for hit-and-run cases under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) will be taken after consultation with the truckers’ body. Representatives of AIMTC met Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Tuesday to raise the issue of stringent provisions for hit-and-run cases.

The BRICS bloc of top emerging economies, including India, Russia and China, has announced induction of five full members into it as part of an attempt to expand its strategic heft against the backdrop of Western dominance in world affairs. As Moscow assumed the presidency of BRICS, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that the grouping has become a 10-nation body now with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joining it as new members. In August, the top BRICS leaders at the grouping's summit in Johannesburg approved a proposal to admit six countries, including Argentina, into the bloc with effect from January 1.
