The fourth month of the Hindi calendar, Ashadha, has started today (12 June). This month will last till 10 July. The new month is considered to start from today as it is the Pratipada date of the Krishna Paksha of Ashadha at sunrise on the morning of 12th June.
From Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashad month (6th July) Lord Vishnu goes into Yog Nidra for four months. That is why it is called Devshayani Ekadashi, after which Lord Shiva controls the universe for four months. Due to this belief, there is a tradition of doing special worship of Vishnu Ji and Shiva Ji in Ashad month.
