Hindu marriage not valid ‘unless performed with ceremonies in proper form’: Supreme Court

New Delhi, May 01, 2024.A Hindu marriage is a ‘samskara’ or sacrament and cannot be recognised under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 “unless performed with ceremonies in the proper form”, the Supreme Court has ruled.Underlining that a Hindu marriage “is a sacrament which has to be accorded its status as an institution of great value in Indian society”, a bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih in an order dated April 19 urged “young men and women to think deeply about the institution of marriage even before they enter upon it and as to how sacred the said institution is, in Indian society”.The top court reminded that “a (Hindu) marriage is not an event for ‘song and dance’ and ‘wining and dining’ or an occasion to demand and exchange dowry and gifts by undue pr...

New Delhi, May 2024.Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Ltd. (Star Health Insurance), market leader in retail health insurance, today announced robust financial results for its Q4 and FY2024. In FY'24 the Company reported a record profit of Rs 845 Cr, up 37% and an increase of 18% in Gross Written Premium (GWP) to Rs 15,254 Cr. New Delhi, May 01, 2024.Ambuja Cements, India’s second-largest cement maker by market capitalisation, reported on Wednesday a smaller-than-expected profit rise in the fourth quarter as lower prices weighed.Cement makers are expected to report subdued income from sales in the reported quarter, owing to a nearly 5 per cent decline sequentially in cement prices across India.The March quarter usually sees cement makers report strong volumes as they push prices down to clear year-end inventory backlogs. New Delhi, May 01, 2024.Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) has reported a 13.26 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit at Rs 381.29 crore during January-March 2024 on account of increased expenses.Its net profit after tax was at Rs 439.60 crore in the January-March period of the preceding 2022-23 financial year, the company said in an exchange filing on Tuesday.For the whole financial year (FY24), the company’s net profit stood at Rs 1,195.61 crore, down from Rs 1,280.60 crore registered in FY23. Jaipur, May 01, 2024.The banking sector reported a higher credit offtake in March amid a pickup in demand from agriculture and industry segments while personal segment growth moderated.On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, non-food bank credit registered a growth of 16.3 per cent in March 2024 as compared with 15.4 per cent a year ago, the Reserve Bank said on Tuesday.“Personal loans growth moderated to 17.7 per cent (y-o-y) in March 2024 (21.0 per cent a year ago) due to decelerated growth in vehicle loans and other personal loans,” the RBI said. Jaipur, May 01, 2024.India’s gross Goods and Services tax (GST) collections rose to a record-high level of Rs 2.10 lakh crore in April (for year-end sales in March), data released by the Finance Ministry on Wednesday (May 1) showed.Driven mainly by a rise in domestic transactions, which increased 13.4 per cent year-on-year along with a higher compliance in the backdrop of anti-evasion measures being taken by authorities, the gross GST collections increased by 12.4 per cent in April.This is the highest level of GST collections recorded since the July 2017 of the indirect tax regime. The previous highest level registered under GST was Rs 1.87 lakh crore in April 2023, reflecting year-end sales of March 2023.
