Scientists have developed a device that can translate paralysed people's brain signals into words at faster speeds than before, a step towards restoring communication to people with severe paralysis. The brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) are capable of decoding brain activity into speech faster, more accurately and covering larger vocabulary than existing technologies, the researchers said. People with neurological disorders, including brainstem stroke or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often face speech loss due to paralysis of muscles.

New Delhi, August 25, 2023. The Dengue virus could become more virulent due to increasing temperatures, according to a study that could help in predicting and mitigating the severity and virulence of the recurring tropical disease that witnesses an outbreak in the monsoon. Researchers at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) in Kerala found that dengue becomes more severe and hostile in animal models when its virus (DENV) while being grown in mosquito-derived cells is exposed to higher temperatures. The research, published recently in the FASEB journal, can help in predicting and mitigating the severity and virulence of dengue which has an estimated global disease burden of 390 million cases per year.

AI-supported breast tumour screening found more cancers, reduced radiologists’ workload: Study

New Delhi, August 03, 2023. Mammography screening supported by artificial intelligence (AI) detected one-fifth more breast cancers compared with standard screening and nearly halved the screen-reading workload for radiologists, new research published in The Lancet Oncology journal said. The findings conveyed the safety of AI-supported mammography, a diagnostic procedure for breast tumour screening, as an alternative to the conventional double reading by radiologists, the study led by Lund University, Sweden, said. Eighty-thousand Swedish women were recruited for the study and randomly allocated into two groups - an intervention group (40,003 women) that underwent AI-supported screening and a control group (40,030) that underwent standard screening.
