Shubman Gill led India to first-ever Test in Birmingham

New Delhi, July 07, 2025.

India achieved a memorable and historic victory against England in the second Test match at Birmingham, defeating the hosts by a massive margin of 336 runs. This victory not only helped India level the five-match series 1-1 but also marked several firsts and record-breaking moments in Indian Test cricket history.

The triumph was India’s first-ever Test win in Birmingham, a venue where the team had struggled since 1967. India had played eight matches here before this losing seven and drawing one. Under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, the team finally broke the jinx in style, registering their biggest win by runs outside India.

From standout performances with the bat to remarkable bowling figures, India’s win was built on the back of Shubman Gill’s double century and Akashdeep’s 10-wicket haul, creating multiple new records in the process.

The 336-run win is India’s largest margin of victory by runs in an overseas Test match. The previous record was a 318-run win over the West Indies in Antigua in 2016. It’s also India’s biggest Test win by runs in England, breaking the 279-run record set at Leeds in 1986.

Akash deep proved to be the game-changer for India. He picked 4 wickets in the first innings and followed it up with 6 more in the second, finishing with match figures of 10/187.

Captain Shubman Gill had a dream Test match. He scored 269 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 161 in the second, taking his match total to 430 runs. This is the highest by any Indian player in a Test match
