University of Guelph offers new scholarships for Indian students
New Delhi, May 2024.
The University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, one of Canada’s top comprehensive and research-intensive universities, is providing a new $2,000 Welcome to Canada President’s Scholarship to all admitted, undergraduate international students from outside of Canada.
The prestigious University of Guelph has been accepting students from India to its diverse campuses for more than a decade with students showing interest in 5 key courses. This fall the university will be welcoming the same number of new international undergraduate and international graduate students as last year to its campuses with a majority of students expected to come from India.
“At the University of Guelph, we are committed to growing and supporting our international student population,” said president and vice-chancellor Dr. Charlotte Yates. “We believe a diverse and global community enriches the distinct student experience we are known for. This new $2,000 scholarship will be awarded in addition to the University’s International Entrance Scholarships valued between $5,500 and $9,500 that are awarded to international students entering post-secondary studies for the first time in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement”.
In addition to offering this new Welcome to Canada President’s Scholarship, the University of Guelph is also guaranteeing residence for all years of study for international undergraduate and international master’s students. International PhD students have guaranteed housing for their first year of study.
“Here, students are provided a holistic experience that instills lifelong skills that will help them adapt to an ever-changing world beyond graduation. “Our institutional retention rate for international students is well above 90 percent and this is because we have put effective wrap-around supports in place for our students from the moment they accept an offer to the time they graduate,” continued Dr Yates.
The university is located in the city of Guelph, which is ranked one of the top three safest cities in Canada and is just an hour from Toronto. The university attracts, supports and graduates international students from 140 countries on six of the seven continents around the world.

The University of Guelph fosters a strong Canada-India network
The university’s long history of attracting students from India is due in part to its diverse and growing connections to the area. The Global Thought Leader in Residence program, which is run in collaboration with the Canada India Foundation, brought Vikas Swarup, author and former diplomat, to campus last year. The university also hosted other Indian luminaries this past year, including His Excellency Sanjay Kumar, High Commissioner of India to Canada, and Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former chief scientist of the World Health Organization.
The University of Guelph has strong research ties to India as the home to the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) and to many researchers who are studying in India and collaborating with Indian counterparts. Dr.Pavneesh Madan, a professor in veterinary medicine at the University of Guelph, is currently the president of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, an organization that is devoted to promoting bilateral research ties.
“We have a growing number of partnerships with Indian institutions that catalyze the exchange of ideas and knowledge needed to power critical discoveries, innovations and train the next generation of global thought leaders,” he said.
Representatives from the University of Guelph will be in India May 17 to 26 to offer on the spot admission to qualified undergraduate students who wish to apply and receive a decision immediately, and to connect with students who currently hold an offer of admission for fall 2024 and guide them through next steps.
