Sports Ministry approves foreign training for Lakshya and Sindhu ahead of Olympics

New Delhi, May 23, 2024.Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen and P V Sindhu will train in France and Germany respectively as part of their Olympic preparations after the Sports Ministry's Mission Olympic Cell approved financial assistance to cover the cost for both of them.Sen had sought financial assistance for a 12-day training session in Marseille, France. Sen, who will compete in the men's singles event in Paris, will train at The Halle des Sports Parsemain with his coach and support staff from July 8 to 21 ahead of the Olympic Games.Sindhu's proposal was for Saarbrucken, Germany to train at the Hermann-Neuberger Sportschule. She will practice there for over a month along with her coach and support staff before heading to Paris.

Jaipur, May 2024.Shriram General Insurance Company (SGIC) has announced that its Gross Written Premium (GWP) during Q4 FY24 has increased by 30% to Rs 876 crore, over the same period last year.  For the fiscal year ended March 2024, the insurer witnessed a 34% growth in GWP, surpassing the industry growth of 12.8%. The company wrote 1474981 policies in Q4FY24 and earned a net profit of Rs. 121 crore during the fourth quarter of FY24. Profits for the year rose 22% YoY at Rs 455 crore. Kolkata, May 22, 2024.The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday struck down the OBC status of several classes in West Bengal granted since 2010, finding such reservations to vacancies in services and posts in the state are illegal.Passing judgment on petitions challenging the provisions of the Act, the court clarified that the services of citizens of the struck-down classes, who are already in service or have availed the benefit of reservation or have succeeded in any selection process of the state will not be affected by the order.The number of enlisted persons under OBC in West Bengal after 2010 is likely to be above five lakhs, one of the lawyers representing the petitioners said.

New Delhi, May 21, 2024.The fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections has so far registered a voter turnout of approximately 62.19 per cent, 1.97 percentage points less than 2019.With the end of polls in the fifth phase on Monday evening, voting has been completed in 25 states and Union Territories and 428 constituencies in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Two more phases -- on May 25 and June 1 -- are remaining now.In the corresponding phase in the 2019 polls, the turnout was registered at 64.16 per cent when 51 seats across seven states went to polls.

New Delhi, May 21, 2024.The draft guidelines being prepared by the Consumer Affairs Ministry will help tackle the menace of unregistered telemarketers, the apex telecom industry body COAI said on Tuesday.The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) -- whose members include Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea etc -- said the industry body is working closely with the government and regulator to address the issue of unsolicited commercial communications (UCC).COAI Director General SP Kochhar said the industry body and its members are also part of the committee, formed by the Department of Consumer Affairs to tackle the menace of pesky calls from unregistered telemarketers.
