UPSC cancels ‘lateral entry’ recruitment ad after letter from Centre

New Delhi, August 20,2024.After a Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) advertisement for filling up 45 posts through “lateral entry” triggered a political controversy, the Central Government on Tuesday asked the UPSC to cancel the advertisement and it was subsequently withdrawn.In a letter to UPSC Chairperson Preeti Sudan, Minister for Department of Personnel and Training Jitendra Singh said, “It is important that the constitutional mandate towards social justice is upheld so that deserving candidates from marginalized communities get their rightful representation in the government services.”“Since these positions have been treated as specialized and designated as single-cadre posts, there has been no provision for reservation in these appointments,” he said in the letter....

New Delhi, August 20, 2024.The government is likely to release draft data protection rules for public consultation within a month, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Monday. The rules are crucial to operationalise the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which was passed by Parliament last year.The minister said the final draft of the rules was reviewed last week, and it is expected to be in the public domain within a month. “The framework is ready, and the draft rules for consultation are expected to be released within a month,” Vaishnaw told reporters.Last year, Parliament passed the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 after several previous iterations of the bill went through a number of deliberations over the span of over half a decade.

BPCL to invest Rs 1.7 lakh crore in next 5 years

Rupee rises 8 paise to 83.79 against US dollar

New Delhi, August 20, 2024.The Indian rupee stayed firm for the second straight session and settled 8 paise higher at 83.79 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, buoyed by positive domestic equity markets, weak American currency and lower crude oil prices.Forex traders said, foreign fund outflow, however, resisted a sharp rise in the local unit.At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 83.86 against the greenback and traded in the range of 83.76 to 83.88. The unit finally settled at 83.79 (provisional) against the dollar, registering a gain of 8 paise from its previous closing level.
