Mahatma Gandhi Hospital performs six swap kidney transplants in a day

A swap kidney transplant can happen when there are many patients and donors waiting, as per urologist and director of MGH’s Kidney Transplant Unit Prof. TC Sadasukhi and Dr Godara Kidney transplant specialists of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital (MGM), Jaipur, recently performed swap kidney transplant in six patients in a single day

Nephrology Head at the hospital, Prof Suraj Godara, said in the first case, the blood group of Behror resident Nishant was B positive while his donor mother Lalta Devi’s blood group was O positive. There was a problem in the transplant due to antibodies. In this situation, he was transplanted with the kidney of swap donor Sarita Yadav.

In the second case, kidney patient Rajni Sharma, a resident of Sri Ganganagar, had blood group AB positive while her husband Gauri Shankar’s blood group was B positive. In such a situation, the kidney transplant too could not be done due to antibodies. Through swap transplant, she was given a kidney of matching swap donor Munni Devi.

In the third case, Jaipur’s Usha Shakya had blood group B positive, while her donor Ramesh Chand’s blood group was A positive. She was transplanted with the kidney of swap donor Lalta Devi Meena.

In the fourth case, Preeti Soni, a resident of Jhunjhunu, had A positive blood group while her donor, her mother Munni Devi, had B positive blood group. She was transplanted with the kidney of swap donor Ramesh Chand. The fifth case was also similar in which the blood group of Didwana resident Mahipal Singh was B positive while his donor, mother Swaroop Kanwar’s blood group was A positive. In such a situation, he was transplanted with the kidney of swap donor Gaurishankar Sharma. In the sixth case, Dinesh Yadav, a resident of Mainpuri, UP, had blood group A positive while his donor wife Sarita had blood group B positive. In absence of a matching blood group, he was waiting for a matching donor for a long time. In such a situation Kanwar’s kidney was transplanted as a swap donor.

The patients were kept in the intensive care unit and discharged after ten days. In the recent follow-up, all the patients and all the donors were found to be doing well and will be back to normal routine “very soon”, the hospital said.
