India’s retail inflation eased to a six-year low of 2.82% in May, with food inflation declining to 0.99%, lowest since October 202. The current inflation figures are within the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) comfort range.
CPI inflation softened in both the rural and urban segments at 2.59% and 3.07%, respectively, in May 2025, compared to 2.92% and 3.36%, respectively in April 2025.
Retail inflation is measured using the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks the prices of everyday goods and services. A lower CPI means a slower rise in prices, which is good for consumers.
Year-on-year inflation rate based on All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for the month of May, 2025 over May, 2024 is 0.99% (Provisional). Corresponding inflation rate for rural and urban are 0.95% and 0.96%, respectively. All India inflation rates for CPI(General) and CFPI over the last 13 months are shown below. A sharp decline of 79 basis point is observed in food inflation in May, 2025 in comparison to April, 2025. The food inflation in May, 2025 is the lowest after October, 2021.
