Meat shops may be shut on Saturdays too: JMC-H Mayor Kusum Yadav

Jaipur, March 25,2025.

Heritage administration is considering keeping meat shops closed on Saturdays in addition to Tuesdays, mayor Kusum Yadav said. She mentioned that a proposal is being prepared regarding this, keeping in mind public sentiments.

Yadav also said a proposal is under consideration to not let meat shops operate within 100 meters of religious places, schools, and hospitals. “Some meat shop operators are operating without a license. Some shops are operating near religious places in the Walled City, which is not right as it hurts the sentiments of people when they go to temples to offer prayers. For this, we are preparing a proposal to keep meat shops closed on Saturdays,” Yadav said Monday.

She added that meat becomes “unclean” when it is sold in the open, and for shops with proper licenses functioning in the vicinity of religious places and schools, talks will be conducted with the shopkeepers to keep their establishments closed on Saturdays.

Jaipur meat merchants association said this was a way to target businesses of members of a certain community. “Strict action should be taken against those who are selling meat without licences, but those who have licences issued by the municipal corporation itself, they should not be targeted. This is another way to hit our businesses. Why should only meat shops be closed? Why doesn’t the same logic apply for liquor stores that fall on the way to any religious place?” said Pappu Qureshi, a member of the association.

On Jan 21, an order was issued that meat shops under jurisdiction of JMC-H will remain closed on Tuesdays.

Since the BJP govt has come to power in the state, strict action has been urged by BJP MLAs against shops selling meat without licences and in the open. BJP MLA from Hawa Mahal, Balmukundacharya, in Dec 2023 started inspections of meat shops.
