November 15 marks the 150th birth anniversary of the tribal icon Birsa Munda, which is celebrated as “Janjatiya Gaurav Divas” to honour the contributions of the tribal freedom fighters. Known as “Dharti Aba” (“Father of the Earth”), Birsa organised the “Ulgulan” or the Munda Rebellion against British oppression in the late 1890s. Birsa Munda spoke against religious conversion while completing his secondary education. In 1875, while getting a secondary education, he raised his voice against religious conversion. Coming down hard on instant 'bulldozer justice', the Supreme Court on Wednesday laid down pan-India guidelines on demolition of properties and said the Executive cannot become a judge, declare an accused as guilty and demolish his house. A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan said it will be "totally unconstitutional" if houses of people are demolished merely because they are accused or even convicts. Rupee slips 1 paisa to close at fresh all-time low of 84.39 against US dollar

New Delhi, November 12, 2024. The rupee fell 1 paisa to a new lifetime low of 84.39 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday as persistent foreign fund outflows and a strengthening greenback against major crosses overseas dented investor sentiments. Forex traders said the rupee is likely to trade between 83.80 and 84.50 in the medium term, with the Reserve Bank of India likely limiting any significant downside, aided by its robust foreign exchange reserves. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.39 against the US dollar. During the session, the local currency touched a high of 84.39 and a low of 84.41. It finally settled at 84.40 (provisional), a decline of just 1 paisa against the US currency, registering a loss for the fifth straight session.

Retail inflation hits 14-month high, rises to 6.21 per cent in October

Jaipur, November 12, 2024. India’s retail inflation surged to a 14-month high of 6.21% in October, exceeding the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) target range. This rise in inflation, attributed to higher food and fuel prices, may prompt tighter monetary policies in the coming months. India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) showed a positive shift, expanding by 3.1% in September compared to a 0.1% contraction in August. According to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), key sectors such as mining, manufacturing, and electricity recorded growth rates of 0.2%, 3.9%, and 0.5%, respectively, indicating a recovery in industrial output.

EPFO sees 7.8% rise in claims settled, subscribers up by 7.6%: Labour Ministry

New Delhi, November 12, 2024. The number of total claims settled by the retirement fund body Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) increased 7.8 per cent year-on-year to 4.45 crore in 2023-24 from 4.13 crore in the previous year, as per the latest data shared by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Sunday. The number of contributing members under the EPFO have also increased 7.6 per cent to 7.37 crore in 2023-24 from 6.85 crore in the previous year, while the number of contributing establishments under the EPFO have increased by 6.6 per cent to 7.66 lakh in 2023-24 from 7.18 lakh, the data showed.
