New safety guidelines for schools

Jaipur, February 28, 2025.

Education department Thursday issued a list of security guidelines that must be ensured by all schools to provide a safe environment for students. The list includes safety measures for buildings, buses, and water and power connectivity.

Last week, three girls aged between six and eight died when a concrete slab over a 20ft deep tank built with allegedly substandard material gave way at a govt school in Bikaner.

An order issued by director of secondary education, Ashish Modi, stated, “An important component for better studies is the healthy and safe environment of the school… due to ignoring of security-related concerns, negligence and non-proper discharge of security-related responsibilities in the school, one has to face unpleasant incidents, which at times becomes extremely painful.”

For school buildings, the guidelines mention that a school building should be used only after certification by the local authorities that it is safe for the use of students. As per the guidelines, the school premises should be free from inflammable and poisonous substances, there should be adequate provision of open space around the building along with proper air circulation and extensive lighting. If the doors are found inadequate, the size of the main exit and classroom doors of the school can be increased. Kitchen and all other activities involving the use of fire are required to be done at a safe place away from the main school building.
