Parents in the city complained to the district administration and the education department about irrational fee hike in private schools at the beginning of the new academic session.
According to the parents’ association, schools across the city raised their fees between 10% and 40% compared to the previous year’s charges. The parents highlighted that private institutions are not adhering to the established fee regulation guidelines and urged officials to take decisive action against non-compliant schools.
Sanyukt Abhibhavak Sangh, the representative body of aggrieved parents in the state, demanded that the state govt enforce fee regulation guidelines in private schools as fees increased without prior notice to parents.
Abhishek Jain Bittu, spokesperson of Sanyukt Abhibhavak Sangh, said, “For the past four years, we requested the authorities to ensure that guidelines related to fee hikes are implemented in private schools, but no concrete action was taken. Parents sending children to private schools are scared as if they protest, then the school might be partial with their children, and their education will be impacted.”
On Tuesday, parents protested outside a private school on Sirsi Road over fee hiked without any discussion with parents. “When we got the fee slips, parents held discussions and gathered at the school and wanted to meet the administration, but we were clearly told that the fee will be as per the school and those who have any problem should get their children admitted to some other school,” said a parent.
In 2023-24, the fee in this school was Rs 60,500, which increased to Rs 77,500 in 2024-25, and this year, the fee increased to Rs 96,500. As per the guidelines of the state education department, fees can be increased only once in three years and will have to be decided by a committee.
