Come April, seven areas in Jaipur will receive round-the-clock water supply. Public health engineering department (PHED) officials said Monday they are ready to provide continuous water supply to at least seven areas in Jaipur, even during the intense summer.
Manish Beniwal, chief engineer (urban and NWR), said that after Bajaj Nagar and Bani Park, PHED will incorporate seven more localities under the round-the-clock supply scheme.
“There is sufficient water in Bisalpur Dam and peak summer season will not be a limitation. During the pilot project in Bani Park and Bajaj Nagar areas, it was observed that the percentage of non-revenue water had decreased from 33% to 21%. In simple words, wastage of water reduced significantly. Once we begin expanding areas with round-the-clock services, this percentage would further improve,” Beniwal said.
On May 19 last year, state govt signed an MoU with the administration of the City of Aarhus in Denmark to develop infrastructure to initiate 24×7 water supply and identify urban areas to be covered under this scheme.
The department subsequently replaced the antiquated supply lines for these areas, thereby curtailing non-revenue leakage of water. Simultaneously, the department ensured that all residential and commercial premises in these areas—known as District Metered Areas—are equipped with water meters to prevent pilferage.
“We aim to implement the system by controlling non-revenue wastage through leakages and by encouraging residents not to stockpile daily supply of water and then dispose of it once supply for the next day resumes,” said PHED secretary Bhaskar Atmaram Sawant.
