Manoj Tiwary announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Kolkata, August 03, 2023.Former India batsman Manoj Tiwary on Thursday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, drawing curtains to a very unique career.Tiwary, who played 12 ODIs and three T20Is between 2008 and 2015, ventured into politics even while he remained an active cricketer, and became a minister of state for sports and youth affairs in West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's state cabinet.But during the 2022-23 domestic season, the 37-year-old returned to play for Bengal and guided the team to the final where they went down to Saurashtra at the Eden Gardens. It was also Tiwary's last First-Class game.

Noida, July 31, 2023.India's Gyaneshwari Yadav and Koyel Bar secured silver medals in the women's 49kg event at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships here on Sunday.While Gyaneshwari finished runner up among the juniors, Koyel came second in the youth category on day three of the Championships at the Gautam Buddha University here.Gyaneshwari lifted a total of 175kg (78kg+97kg). Two failed attempts -- one each in snatch and clean and jerk section -- prevented the Chhattisgarh from matching her gold-winning effort at the Commonwealth Senior Championships held here earlier this month.

SAI to provide financial assistance to 4 fencers for the upcoming World University Games

New Delhi, July 26, 2023.Sports Authority of India (SAI) will financially support four fencers from the SAI National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) for the upcoming World University Games in Chengdu, China. The Fencers include Abhay Krishna Shinde (NCOE Patiala and TOPS Athlete), Durgesh Milind Jahagirdar (NCOE Aurangabad and Khelo India Athlete) and NCOE Patiala Athletes Tannu Gulia and Shiksha Ballouria.As the event is not covered under Fencing’s Annual Calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC) plans, the World University Games will get international exposure for the athletes. Therefore, SAI has decided to give funding as a special case to the athletes. The 31st edition of the competition is scheduled from July 28 to August 8.

Mumbai, June 30, 2023.Former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar is all set to become the chairman of the senior selection committee of BCCI, a post that has been vacant since February 17 when former fast bowler Chetan Sharma resigned after he was at the centre of a sting operation.BCCI officials contacted Agarkar with a promise to increase the annual salary of the chief selector, which is currently Rs 1 crore. Agarkar then decided to apply and he is the only big name in the list of applicants. He quit his role as assistant coach of IPL team Delhi Capitals on Thursday. Interestingly, in 2020, BCCI had not picked Agarkar when he had applied for the selector’s post.
