Granules gets USFDA nod for generic gout medication

New Delhi, April 30, 2024. Drug firm Granules India on Tuesday said it has received approval from the US health regulator to market a medication used to prevent or treat gout attacks. Granules Pharmaceuticals, Inc, a wholly-owned foreign subsidiary of the company, has received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for Colchicine Capsules (0.6 mg), it said in a regulatory filing. The company’s product is therapeutically equivalent to Hikma International Pharmaceuticals LLC’s Mitigare Capsules (0.6 mg), it added. Colchicine Capsules are indicated for prophylaxis of gout flares in adults. According to industry sources, the current annual market for Colchicine Capsules in the US is expected to be around USD 55 million.

Diets high in ultra-processed foods raise death risk from chronic lung conditions

Jaipur, April 10, 2024. A diet high in ultra-processed foods could significantly heighten the risk of dying from chronic respiratory diseases, a new research spanning over almost two decades has found. Constituents of these "nutritionally inferior" foods, which are "poor sources of essential nutrients such as antioxidants", contribute to inflammation and worsen lung conditions, the study published in the European Journal of Nutrition said. A diet having more than 40 per cent of ultra-processed foods was found to have a 26 per cent higher risk of death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung disorder which blocks airflow causing difficulty in breathing.

14.1 lakh new cancer cases, 9.1 lakh deaths in India: WHO

New Delhi, February 02, 2024. India had more than 14.1 lakh new cancer cases and over 9.1 lakh deaths due to the disease, and breast cancer was the most common, according to the latest estimates of the disease's global burden by the World Health Organization (WHO). Cancers of lip, oral cavity and lung were the most common ones in men, accounting for 15.6 and 8.5 per cent of the new cases, respectively, whereas, cancers of breast and cervix were the most frequent ones in women, making up close to 27 and 18 per cent of the new cases, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO's cancer agency has estimated. It also calculated that the number of people alive within 5 years following a cancer diagnosis was nearly 32.6 lakhs in India.

New Delhi, January 11, 2024. India recorded 514 new cases of COVID-19, while the number of active cases of the infection has declined to 3,422, the health ministry said on Thursday. Three deaths – two in Maharashtra and one in Karnataka have been reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am. The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, 2023, but cases began to increase after the emergence of a new sub-variant -- JN.1 -- and cold weather conditions.
