International Tiger Day has been held on 29th July every year since 2010, when it was first established at the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit. This was done to raise awareness of the decline in the numbers of wild tigers, leaving them on the brink of extinction, and also to celebrate the important work of tiger conservation. India is among the few countries with a successful record in tiger conservation. According to the 2022 Census, there are 3,167 tigers in the country, accounting for nearly 75 per cent of the world’s tiger population. International Tiger Day provides a global forum for ideas on and around tiger conservation, and the protection of tiger habitats, so that nations worldwide can coordinate their efforts to save this most magnificent of wild animals. The day also raises public awareness and support for tiger conservation.
India has seen a gradual surge in the number of tigers, from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,226 in 2014. Besides efforts by wildlife conservationists and forest officials, experts cite nature tourism as one of the reasons for the roaring success of tiger conservation in India.
